FAQs

  • How may staff will you provide at the event?
We believe that it is important to ensure we always have enough staff for the job. The exact number is dependant on how many guests we must provide for, and how complex the meal is But for a standard hog roast for up to 100 people we will provide 1 cook / chef and upto 1 assistant that will assist with setting up the serving area and do serving. This is for a buffet type of meal, where guests help themselves from a serving area / table, for table service there will be additional costs to provide extra waiting staff We can provide extra serving staff at an added cost of £120 each per event.
  • How much is the deposit and how do I pay it?
We charge £200 to secure a date for your event. You can pay using all our usual payment methods Credit / debit card - there will be a link on any invoice we send or you can pay over the phone bank transfer Cheque Cash however the quickest way is to send a bank transfer to us at beneficiary: Tasty Hog Ltd sort code: 60-83-71 Account: 77582171 Reference: your name + postcode or your invoice number
  • When do you need the final guest numbers?
We will need to know the final number of guests no later than two weeks / 14 days before the event. This is to give us enough time to book staff and arrange things with our suppliers. No reductions in guest numbers can be made after this date, however we may be able to cater for more guests, providing the increase in number sisn't massively different to those quoted for, please call us to discuss this
  • When is the remaining balance due?
We ask that all remianing balances due for your event are made as soon as possible. For late bookings, ie bookings made for events within 21 days we require full payment for your event at the time of booking. For all other bookings full payment must be recieved at least 14 days prior to your event. If we dont recieve full payment by 14 days prior, your catering by Tasty Hog Ltd may be cancelled and calcelaltion fees may apply. please see our website at www.tastyhog.co.uk/info for full details
  • Do you need access to hot / cold running water?
Just like our power needs we are fully contained. However if there is a supply at your venue / site it would be great to have access to it.
  • Can you cater an all day event?
We are happy to discuss catering for full day events. we are able to provide a breakfast, a buffet type lunch, an evening hog roast and late evening BBQ. These of course will be bespoke quotes so please contact us to discuss your needs.
  • Alcohol? Can you provide it? serve it?
At the moment we only have personal alcohol licences and only have a limited amount of temporty events licences we can apply for to enable us to serve / sell alcohol at events, we try to keep these back for larger events where we will be catering on a rtail type basis. But please call us to discuss the possibility of us applying for a temport events licence for your evnt and providing a drinks service. We are happy to serve your own drinks subect to a corkage fee and additional waiter / waiteress fees being paid. We are however working on gaining a full premesis licence for a mobile bar where we can offer a full drinks service for you events. Where we do agree to provide a drinks serving / bartender / waitress service the cost will be £120 per employee per event, larger events will need 2 or more employees to cover the bar / serving of drinks.
  • Health & Safety?
of course! Our business is registered with the Cornwall Council and our premises have been through a Hygiene Safety Inspection. you can view out higuene rating on the food.gov website here All of our hog roasting chefs have a minimum of level 2 in health and hygiene in catering qualification, and are all qualified chefs and have industry and event catering experience. All of our equipment goes through a yearly gas safety check and / or PAT testing. The company holds public liability insurance for up to 5 million pounds per event.
  • What is the maximum distance you will travel?
Our prices are based on the event being held within 30 miles of Penzance, Cornwall. However we can travel a greater distance but there will be a charge of 80p per mile for any excess mileage over 60 miles for the round trip. This fee is to cover extra staff and transport costs We will estimate mileage using google maps for routing purposes.
  • Do you need access to power?
We are fully contained, we dont need to have outside power to enable us to cater an event. Though our roaster is gas powered, we will need a small amount of electrical power to run the motor for the spit, we also need to run lights for evening catering etc we can do this with our own quiet generator. however, if there is access to a power supply it would be helpful if we are able to have access to it, we use standard 13a / 3kwh mains sockets. In cases where there is a power supply we can use a long extension lead with circut breaker to get power out to our catering area.
  • What happens after i've approached you to cater my event?
We will see if the date and / or time is avaliable, or see if an alternative time is to your liking if we already have events booked on that day, we can cater for multiple events a day during peak season / holiday periods. We will then send you a breakdown of the cost along with a booking form for your event and all the event details. we will also raise an invoice for £200 that will be used as a deposit to secure your proposed date.
  • Can I cancel or move my booking after I have made a deposit?
The deposit is non refundable however it is possible to move the event if it is more than one month away, to any available period in the following three months. We will not be able to move any event which is less than one month away without you incurring cancellation charges, along with needing to make a new deposit. Please read out cancellation policy at www.tastyhog.co.uk/info to see our cancellation charges and when they apply. But if you cancel more than one month prior to your event you will just lose your deposit and will incur no further charges.
  • What access do you require?
Our hog roasting machines will fit through a standard front door, and most internal doors. However the machine is almost 6 foot long, so needs quite a lot of space where going around corners may be needed, due to the weight of the machine we can't turn it on it's side to go around corners. Due to the weight of our roaster, we ask that we can park our van within 10 metres of the set-up area, and that if there are any steps to scale, you alert us to this beforehand. It would not stop the show if there is a greater distance to carry, but we need to know beforehand as it will take us longer to set up. If you do have limited space we can try to cook in another area providing there is suffienct space for the hog oven to be safely used, we can then move the cooked pig to a different serving area.
  • Do you do other types of catering?
We are fairly flexible in what we can offer. We arent just limited to hog / lamb roasts, barbecues and buffets. Please contact us to discuss other catering options
  • How long will you be serving food for?
This depends on the event, the menu and guest numbers. Depending on guest numbers we try to be done with serving 1 hour after the booked serving time. for larger events this is extended to 2 hours at no additional cost. Where you want a longer serving time there will be an additional fee.
  • How long does it take to roast a whole pig?
A full pig takes approximately 6-7 hours. This process is done from start to finish on your site.
  • How much space do you need?
This depends on the number of guests, but we can cater in a 3m x 3m pop up shelter, so we need at least this size along with arounnd 1.5m in front to allow for guests to queue and collect food. We do however like to have more space so we can setup serving tables away from our shelter.
  • What about wet weather?
We have a variety of gazebos so can cater in most weathers, 3 x 3 metre tent for smaller events and a 6m x 3m one for larger ones, which has detatchabale sides if required and will keep the hog-roasting area nice and dry. If the weather is driving your guests indoors we are more than happy to continue and bring the food indoors to you. Subject to any restictions on the venue and an additional insurance premium being paid we can also cook the hog inside, or cook it outside and fully setup a servery area inside.
  • Do you cook the pig / lamb with the head on?
This is entirely up to you, we like to do the 'tradional' hog roast with it still attached, but every event is different, so it can be removed or left on, it's your choice. You will need to specify your preference at the time of booking, because leaving the head on is a special order item from our supplier. Where no preference is stated the default option will be a headless roast.
  • How will you find me?
All of our vans are fitted with GPS, so all we will need is a postcode and the road number of your venue. However if you know that your address is difficult to find please send us some extra directions.
  • Do I need full event details to secure a date?
No you dont, if you are planning a wedding, party or other kind of event where full details are not yet finalised you can still secure a date with us. we can secure a date with just a deposit only and details of a rough serving time. we require no further details about the event. However it will be helpful if we can get a roughh idea at the time of booking of what menu options you'd like, serving time and rough guest numbers. We require full details of the menu, guest numbers and vanue at least 30 days prior to your event.
  • Can I make changes to my booking?
Yes, you can. Once you have made your booking you can make any changes up to 30 days before the event. Within 2 weeks of your event we may not be able to alter the booking, as we will have already organised staff and arranged items from other suppliers, so we can't make menu cnagnges or reduce the number we are catering for. However we may be able to cater for more guests or add additional items to your menu.
  • How do I start the booking process?
The best way is to send us an email at oink@tastyhog.co.uk detailing the date and time you'd like, along with guest numbers and menu choices etc. You are however free to call us on 01736 888446 to discuss your event with us. You can also fill out our quote request form on our website here
  • What happens after i've paid a deposit? is my date then secured?
Yes! Once we recieve a cleared deposit payment your date / time of your booking will be secured. At this point we will send you a confrimation email / letter with all the details of your booked event. All the details are now locked in and we will require written notification by post or email of any proposed changes you wish to make
  • Is my date / booking guaranteed from when I first contact you?
Unfortunately not, during busier periods we get quite a few enquaries for catering events. We need to secure a deposit from you before we can confirm your date is booked
  • Is the deposit refundable?
Unfortunately your deppsits are non refundable, this is due to having to turn down additional bookings once you wish to secure a date for your event, it also covers the admin work involved with arranging the catering for the event.
